GRADINGS

The walks listed in our programme are graded as follows:
A+ and A Strenuous - for the fit. Normally over hills and rough terrain. Could involve steep ascents and descents; normally more than 750 metres of climbing.
B+ and B Moderate - easier than 'A' grade walks but could have at least one feature of an 'A' grade walk; normally more than 250 metres of climbing, or 14 kilometres distance.
C+ and C Easier walks - less than 250 metres of climbing and 14 kilometres distance.
Where a grading of the walk differs from the above guidelines it is because of other factors, e.g. difficulty of the terrain.

GENERAL NOTES
SUNDAY WALKS Meet at 9.00am in the Tryst Car Park (first on the left off Tryst Road).
WEDNESDAY WALKS Meet at 9.30am in the Tryst Car Park (first on the left off Tryst Road).
TUESDAY MORNING WALKS Please check the programme - these use local public transport and so details of the meeting points vary.
BUSES Bus rambles need not be booked in advance since a large enough bus will be provided, although in the case of a shortage of seats, these will be allocated firstly with preference given to members, and secondly a first-come, first-served basis. The current fare (£10) must be paid on the day. Please note that children (age 16 and under), who must be accompanied by an adult, travel free.
CARS Those receiving lifts are expected to make a voluntary contribution towards the costs. It is suggested that the cost of the use of a care is 20 pence per mile per car load, shared equally. In order to make efficient use of the cars provided, at least three people should travel in each car where possible. CAR OWNERS SHOULD CHECK THAT THIS DOES NOT INFRINGE THE CONDITIONS OF THEIR CAR INSURANCE.
DOGS WE REGRET THAT DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

MEMBERS SHOULD STAY NEAR TO THE LEADER, NOT OUT OF SIGHT OR EARSHOT. MEMBERS SHOULD NOT LEAVE A WALK WITHOUT INFORMING THE LEADER.

EQUIPMENT / WHAT TO BRING. Warm and waterproof clothing and strong footwear should be taken. Walking boots are essential on grade 'A+' and 'A' walks and desirable on all walks. Be prepared for changeable weather conditions. JEANS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED.

A PACKED LUNCH SHOULD BE TAKEN AND A FLASK OF HOT DRINK IS RECOMMENDED.

THE COUNTRY CODE. Members are expected to observe the Country Code and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

THE RAMBLERS' ASSOCIATION. All those interested in walking are welcome to join us but we would expect those taking part on a regular basis to join the Association. Details are available from the Membership Secretary. You might also want to check out the information on the Ramblers' website here.

THE LEADER MAY CHANGE A WALK because of adverse weather or ground conditions, or for any other good reason.

MEMBERS are reminded that the main objective of the programme is to help members enjoy walking. With this in mind the committee would like to emphasis the following:
Inexperienced walkers must check with the leader before coming on a grade of walk with which they are unaccustomed. This applies where the inability to cope with the conditions and maintain a reasonable walking pace can cause a problem for the leader. This could affect the safety of the party. In the interests of safety the leader may refuse to lead anyone whom he/she considers to be not properly equipped or able.
Consideration for other walkers - as groups are usually made up of members of varying walking ability, please consider those at the back of the party. Leaders, especially, are reminded that they must set and control the pace of the walk to reflect these differing abilities and must not allow the pace to be dictated by a few members of the party who may tend to force the pace.

INSURANCE. Please note that neither the Group nor leaders of walks in the programme can accept liability for any accident which may occur on any walks. Personal Accident Insurance for ramblers and members is available from British Mountaineering Council Services Ltd. Crawford House, Precinct Centre, Bridge Street East, MANCHESTER, M13 9RZ

All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate of minimise the potential for an accident to arise.

SUGGESTIONS FOR WALKS AND VOLUNTEERS AS LEADERS. These are welcome at any time, not only when a new programme is being prepared. Potential leaders who do not have a walk in mind may lead a walk already chosen for the programme, e.g. a grade 'C' alternative to a grade 'B' walk.

SOCIAL EVENINGS start at 8.00pm in the Smiddy Inn, Ben Lawers Road, Balloch. A programme of intended events is included in the Walks programme. Up-to-date information will appear in the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle at the appropriate time.

LIBRARY. The Group has Ordnance Survey© maps and a selection of books which may be borrowed from the Librarian at the Social Evenings and on most Sundays. Details on the Contacts page.

SMOKING. We ask members who smoke not to do so at the inconvenience or annoyance of other members.
