General Notes GRADINGS The walks listed in our programme are graded as follows:
Where a grading of the walk differs from the above guidelines it is because of other factors, e.g. difficulty of the terrain.
ON THE WALK: CHANGES TO WALKS. The walk leader may change a walk because of adverse weather, ground conditions or for any other good reason. KEEPING TOGETHER. Walkers should stay near to the leader, not out of sight or earshot. Walkers should not leave a walk for any reason without informing the leader. SMOKING. We ask members who smoke not to do so at the inconvenience or annoyance of other members. RESPECTING THE COUNTRYSIDE. All walkers are expected to observe the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. back top WHAT TO WEAR; WHAT TO BRING: WHAT TO WEAR. Warm and waterproof clothing and strong footwear should be taken. Walking boots are essential on grade 'A+' and 'A' walks and desirable on all walks. Be prepared for changeable weather conditions. JEANS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED. Walkers may choose to bring a change of footwear and outer clothing, especially for our longer walks or when the weather forecast is poor. These can be left in the car or bus at the start of the walk and, at the end of the walk, can provide a dry, comfortable alternative to wet clothing. WHAT TO BRING. Please bring a packed lunch on our Sunday or Wednesday walks. Bring along a snack to eat on our Tuesday walks (but check the programme just in case it is a longer walk). On all walks, we recommend bringing a flask of hot drink. back top YOUR SAFETY: Members are reminded that the main objective of the programme is to help members enjoy walking. With this in mind the committee would like to emphasis the following: > Inexperienced walkers must check with the leader before coming on a grade of walk with which they are unaccustomed. This applies where the inability to cope with the conditions and maintain a reasonable walking pace can cause a problem for the leader. This could affect the safety of the party. > In the interests of safety the leader may refuse to lead anyone whom he/she considers to be not properly equipped or able. > Consideration for other walkers - as groups are usually made up of members of varying walking ability, please consider those at the back of the party. > Leaders, especially, are reminded that they must set and control the pace of the walk to reflect these differing abilities and must not allow the pace to be dictated by a few members of the party who may tend to force the pace. back top INSURANCE: Please note that neither the Group nor leaders of walks in the programme can accept liability for any accident which may occur on any walks. Personal Accident Insurance for ramblers and members is available from British Mountaineering Council Services Ltd. Crawford House Precinct Centre Bridge Street East MANCHESTER M13 9RZ All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate of minimise the potential for an accident to arise. back top JOINING THE RAMBLERS: All those interested in walking are welcome to join us but we would expect those taking part in our walks on a regular basis to join the Ramblers. Details are available from the Membership Secretary (details on Contacts page). You might also want to check out the information on the main Ramblers' website. back top SOCIAL ACTIVITIES We run a number of Social Evenings during the year. They start at 8.00pm in the Weavers, Airdrie Road, Condorrat. A programme of intended events is included in the Walks page of our website and also the Social Events page. Up-to-date information will appear in the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle at the appropriate time. SUGGESTIONS FOR WALKS AND VOLUNTEERS AS LEADERS: These are welcome at any time, not only when a new programme is being prepared. Potential leaders who do not have a walk in mind may lead a walk already chosen for the programme, e.g. a grade 'C' alternative to a grade 'B' walk. ACCESS PROBLEMS: Members encountering access problems (blocked routes, etc.) are requested to report these as fully as possible to the Group's Footpath Officer or to another committee member. The Footpath Officer will then report any problems to the appropriate authority. LIBRARY: The Group has Ordnance Survey© maps and a selection of books which may be borrowed from the Librarian at the Social Evenings and on most Sundays. Details on the Contacts page. back top |
